Description:
Gladys Nilsson: Works from 1966-2010
UIMA and The Illinois State Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts are pleased to present Gladys Nilsson: Works from 1966-2010, a retrospective exhibition highlighting the achievements of this Chicago artist's career as she celebrates her 70th birthday. Nilsson has established herself as an artist of international repute, having been represented in scores of group and solo exhibitions over the last 40 years. Although Nilsson has been far too productive for a fully comprehensive exhibition, this show attempts to represent the range of her work, both in style and materials, from the beginning of her career.
In the late 1960's, Nilsson was part of the core group of artists who became known as Imagists; these artists brought national attention to Chicago art for the first time. Nilsson shares the quirkiness, love of popular culture, humor, visual and verbal punning, and masterful technical skills with her Chicago contemporaries Roger Brown, Jim Nutt and Karl Wirsum, among others. Her approach to the humorous, figural images that characterize the Imagists was, and remains, distinctive, often focusing on representations of women in a variety of situations. She has continued to develop her extraordinary densely populated images in ever fascinating ways. This exhibition gives viewers the opportunity to see the development of Nilsson's work in a variety of media from the beginning of her career. It is also a window into the history of art in Chicago of a crucial and important period.
